To mark breast cancer awareness month is the newly launched online breast cancer risk level calculator. You can simply enter information about your life style and family health history (no names and strict privacy protection) and then get told what your personal risk of evaluation.
This free calculator is available for women and men all over the world and only takes moments to complete to find out your own personal risk factors and way to helpful information on how to your risk. The National Breast Cancer Centre has launched the breast cancer risk calculator, coordinating with Pink Ribbon Day, to arm women and men with information about the disease. NBCC director Helen Zorbas said the online calculator processed information including a person's age, genetic history, height, weight, and alcohol intake. It then advises you of your risk level.
"Importantly the calculator also provides useful information about lifestyle changes women may wish to make to reduce their risk," Dr Zorbas said.
"Unfortunately no one can guarantee that any one woman will never develop breast cancer, but it is important that women are aware of what can potentially put them at risk."
The calculator is a direct educational response to the survey results the NBCC found in 2003 that there is a lot of confusion about the things that may increase a woman's chance of developing breast cancer, known as risk factors. A surprising number of women were not aware that life style choices like drinking alcohol and being overweight were known cancer risk factors as well as a higher rate of risk with age.
It is important to separate the fact from the fiction about cancer risk factors. With an understanding of the things that may increase your chance of developing cancer, you can take positive steps to reduce your risk. Medical research is also finding that by reducing your risk factors for cancer you also can reduce risks for other major illnesses like heart disease so it has a much broader benefit.
The breast cancer risk calculator is on the NBCC website at www.nbcc.org.au
This site is full of research and information and is well worth the read. So empower yourself with the facts so you can improve your health's resilience. This new and useful free calculator to test your risk levels as well as providing information to lower your personal risk is available for all.
